So, here are my predictions and results for the first 2 hours of Terra Nova. I made the predictions on Monday before the show and added the results today:

1) Young girl of main family will be bored and get mad at mom/dad for being in such a boring place and leaving all her friends behind. - Didn't really happen

2) Young girl or young guy of main family will go somewhere that they were told not to go and get in trouble. - Happened with young guy

3) Young girl or young guy from main family will meet a cute guy or girl (respectively) that they are told to stay away from due to their relation to someone of questionable power and get into trouble. - Happened mostly. Will happen eventually. (Should have broken this up into two.)

4) Young girl will be too busy to listen to parents due to constantly listening to what ever futuristic music playing device and mom/dad will have to rip the headphone out of her ears at some point. - Didn't happen

5) Some kid will get caught making out with someone they should not be with and get into trouble. Almost happened. - Will eventually

6) Some very young kid will be a technical wiz and save the day. - Didn't happen

7) Head military guy will be at odds with main family mom/dad. - Starting to happen

8) Young girl will get very mad at mom/dad and storm off and get into trouble. - Happened big time but with young guy instead.

‎9) A little boy named 'Billy' will be kidnapped or get lost. - Didn't happen

Instead of the usual pissed off teen aged girl we're given a pissed off teen aged boy. But still, there's always a pissed off teen in SciFi...

I've never really been into comic books. That is to say, I've been interested in them but never bought any that I can remember. My older brother was the one who was very much into comics. As a result I found an interest in some of them such as Marvel Comic's Captain Marvel from the late 60's, early 70's. He also collected X-Men, The Avengers, etc... I've kept all my brother's comics in a trunk all these years and even priced some of them with a (former) friend and bagged some of the more valuable ones.

But I found myself drawn to this new Star Trek series from IDW Publishing. It's a retelling of some of the original series episodes but with the cast of the 2009 movie, Star Trek XI. So I broke down and bough issue #1 from Big World Comics in Carrollton. I haven't read it yet but I intend to this weekend. I'm excited and look forward to the rest of the issues. Well this is the first time I've had a chance to sit down and sum up my OpenCamp experience since last weekend. I must say that it was a fantastic experience!!! I felt as though I was swimming in the deep end of the pool of knowledge. So much was over my head! But what a ride! They put on a hell of a weekend. The work the OpenCamp team put in was extraordinary. I can't imagine the logistics involved. My special thanks to Cali Lewis for giving me the nudge I needed when I was on the fence about attending. All the speakers were great but I wish they were able to talk longer. The information flowed like crazy though!! I was focused on Wordpress so I stayed in the one room for most of the weekend. I didn't even know how to install it but I'm getting there slowly.

Special thanks to the Army Golden Knights for the special jump they made for Opencamp. I also what to shout out the the new friends I made there, especially Israel Denis (www.cendien.com, his blog), Shelia Norling (ChangeYourMynd.com) and Rebecca Aguilar. They made it special and fun for me!

Maybe I can volunteer to help out next year?? I would love to!!!! I'll have to look into it.

for a couple of months now. I keep making the excuse that I don't really belong at such an event, and it's a bit expensive for me, blah, blah, etc, etc...

Hello to anyone reading this blog (and I don't think anyone is really...). It's bee a long time since I posted anything. I let the new Star Trek movie pass by without even a peep from me. But I'm back now and I'm going to start off with some thoughts on the Star Trek Online beta (pasted from my Facebook post to a friend):

"I'm not liking the WASD controls for when my character is walking around at all. Hand to hand combat and phaser combat is OK. Kind of confusing. Not sure how to aim at anyone but I seemed to be able to hit who I wanted but not sure how. The ship combat was so-so but it grew on me a little bit by the time the session was over. I was a little pissed that I could not give my character hair like mine. No 'fros or even short black person's hair in the custom choices. Heck, I couldn't even give him jet black hair! I like to make my characters look as much like me as possible so it looks like "I" am actually in the game but I couldn't here. The visuals are cool, and the ship customization is cool too. But this IS a beta so more work will be done. There is a another session from 12:00pm to 3:00pm today that I will jump on."

R.I.P. Majel Barrett-Roddenberry

On Thursday, 12/18/08, news came that Majel Barrett-Roddenberry passed away after a fight with leukemia. I realize that time marches on and we all age and pass on, but as a fan, I am still saddened. I never really know what to say in these times when someone passes away but I just wanted to say something in my blog. My condolences to her family and God bless her. She gave so much outside the world of Trek as well. But we will hear her computer voice one more time in Star Trek XI next year. I'm sure it will be a fitting end to a great career!

She will be missed...

Congtats to the NY Giants for winning the NFC Championship! The Packers are a great team and I know Favre and the Pack will get there again soon and kick butt. But this is the year for the Giants in the NFC. Now let's see if they can take the Patriots. It will be tough but I think it's possible.

Space Shuttle Mission Sim

Hello there!

I'm a space nut! I follow NASA goings on almost the way one would follow their favorite sports team. Sometimes I Tivo ISS EVAs on NASA TV!!! Good Lord!!! But that's what I like to do.

I'm also a gamer. I mainly play PC games as I have not been blessed with any of the newer game consoles as I still only have an N64... :-( So when I have a chance to combine my love of space with my love of PC games I'm in heaven. My current diversion is in the form of Space Shuttle Mission 2007 (http://www.space-shuttle-mission.com/) It was released the week of Christmas 2007, just 2 weeks before this writing.

It's a highly accurate, realistic simulation of Space Shuttle operations. Various missions are available with the game and more are going to be provided in the months to come. I first played a Shuttle sim way back in 1993 with a game by Virgin Interactive. It's very similar to that only it's a much higher fidelity program and has much more depth. Software has come a long way in 14 to 15 years. There was another sim called S3 (Space Shuttle Sim) which was a free game that came out about 2 years ago. It's was much better than the 1993 version, again, coming many years later. But the 1993 game started it all!!!

Anyway, those of you who may be interested check out the link provided. It's about $50 and I think it's worth it.

Hello out there in blogland!

It's been a while since I've posted. I have been working 2 jobs to make ends meet.

Well another Christmas has come and gone. But the season is still with us so I say continue to celebrate and party. New Years is just around the corner so there is still some psrtying to do. JUST DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!!! PLEASE!!! Anyway, since this is supposed to be a TECHIE blog and I have moved away from being very techie here I want to try to get back to somewhat the original reason for this blog. To talk about techie and trekie (meaning SciFi in general...) stuff.

So, did you get any cool techie Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa gifts? I didn't... :-( But I bought myself a web cam yesterday finally. Here's my first posted pic from the new camera--->

Any thoughts on this game? I'm looking forward to it but I'm gullible and easy to please. Since the disaster of Star Wars Galaxies I'm a little reluctant. But I hear that SWG has had a slight resurgence of late. We'll have to see.

Still plugging away in that game and still enjoying it. But I think I will really get into it once I fine a good player corp to join. I'm still waffling on which one to get into since there are so many!!

I did something last weekend that was so totally out of my league but I had fun anyway. Talk about "out side the box"!! I tried out some Ceili Dance. It's the traditional form of Irish step dancing. Sort of like Flatley's Lord of the dance but in the more traditional way. I had a blast ans I will go again on their next social on December 8th. (That's me on the left... in case you couldn't tell who looks out of place...)

It was a heck of a work out at first. Also, my bad knees were screaming at me by the time it was over. Some Aleve took care of that! I had a really good time. My friend Mike Harrison and his wife Susan run the group. They perform at various functions in the area and I think they also compete. They were very gracious and did not expect anyone new to be experts. Even thought I often, literally, forgot my right from my left I had a blast. Everyone was helpful and kind.

New Job...

This is a melancholy week for me. This is the last week at my present job at ICT and I start a new job tomorrow (10/4/07). I will be back at my office for one last time on Friday the 5th in order to wrap up stuff and arrange for COBRA ans stuff like that. As I walked out of there today I stopped and took a look around and was sad. I slowly walk out the door and didn't say anything to anyone.

My boss has been very good to me and this is one of the few jobs where I can say that. My last job was great and I still consider that boss my friend. But this boss has been especially kind and accommodating this past year.

So I will be in a consultant role in this new company. It pays way less than what I'm making now but I'm thankful to be working.

In the meantime, I'm getting a little deeper into Eve Online. I've entered lower security space and making a living there. I just figured out why my status has not risen much after all the missions I've been running. I've been running these missions for different corporations each time. If I stay with one corp I will improve my standing with that corp and be eligible for higher ranked missions!!

New shows this past 2 weeks! I've decided to watch Chuck, Bionic Woman and Life, all on NBC. So far I like them, especially Life. The others are OK and I'll stick with them for now. I decided to skip Journeyman simply because I know I'll like it and I just don't want to watch that much TV these days. I already watch too much as it is!!!

I want to say hello to my buddy Diana who has been patiently waiting for me to update my blog. HEY KIDDO!!! heheheeeee 8^)

First (Short) Impression of Eve Online

Hello Folks,

Well, after a weekend of delving into the game I have to say that I like it!! It SO deep with layers upon layers of depth that I can't even begin to understand yet. There is a very steep learning curve. But I enjoy the big, complex, immersing games.

I already lost my first ship... :-( I just froze when confronted with a situation. (Gotta learn how to bug out quickly when things get dicey...) It all happened so fast it was overwhelming. But that's what it's all about. Being out there and taking chances. (insurance it a good thing...)

SO, I'm settling in for the long haul! More to come...

Jumping into the universe of EVE Online!!

Well folks, tonight I'm going to take the plunge. I've been watching this game for the past 3-4 years and I've had it with that. I want to get into the thick of it. So tonight I'm going to start an account on Eve Online!! (http://www.eve-online.com/)

After watching tonights new Doctor Who on the SciFi Channel I'm jumping in. I'm thinking of some proper names for my character. I will probably be a Minmatar in the Brutor tribe. Their back story seems to speak to me for some reason. They also have decent starting attributes. You have the option to create up to 3 characters (or avatars) but I have not decided if I'm going to do that right away yet. I intend on creating my account and character tonight and getting into the tutorials early tomorrow morning. I may post my adventures here so if anyone out there plays, I'll post my character name here and we can connect. So I expect to get my ass kicked at first and I have no idea what direction I want to take. But that will come in time.

The business world, or rather, the powers that be in a given corporation make decisions in order to benefit the greater whole that is the company. These decisions will, inevitably turn someones life upside down. Overseas competition is driving more businesses out of the US. I found out yesterday that the place where I work is shifting it's business overseas and will close down in October. At least we have been given advanced notice. It could have been MUCH worse. So I'm out of a job... But my managers (who were not a part of the decision to close this building) are being very accommodating and helping me whenever and wherever they can. I have to say that my boss and his boss (and even their boss) are really great guys and I will miss them.

So if you know anyone in the DFW area who is looking for a Systems Administrator, let me know!

Back in June...

Back in June, before I decided to start this blog, I went to the Dallas Symphony and checked out a performance called The Music of Star Trek. It was fun!! John Delancy and Robert Picardo were there to narrate. They went through the whole history from the original series to the Next Gen movies. They played selections from all the series. It was very informative as the two narrators gave lots of insight on the background of the franchise and little know examples of trivia. Way fun!!!!

Sys Admin Appreciation Day!

Hello all! Today is a very obscure and almost unknown day known as Systems Administrator Appreciation Day. (http://www.sysadminday.com/) It was started back in 2000 by Ted Kekatos and has occurred on the last Friday of July ever since. You can read the history of it at the link I provided.

Some outside the tech community see this day as a joke and waste of time. I even met with anger from one who felt that this is some sort of travesty. I'm a sys admin and while I can understand that some will not appreciate this, I do. I like the possibility of a day to recognize any group of people for doing something hard and helpful to others. While I cannot nor will not even begin to compare Sys Admin Day to, say, Mother's Day or Veteran's Day, to have a day for us is just a nice thought.

Well, anyway, a big thank you to all those who appreciate us.

DFW SciFi Meetup!

I recently joined the DFW SciFi Meetup Group (http://scifi.meetup.com/284/) Saturday night, I went to my first Meetup event. I met a great group of people and had a really good time. Jesse, the organizer, made me feel right at home. We met at an On The Border restaurant in Irving. It was so great to sit with a group of like-minded people and have fun. I was having so much fun that I forgot to take some pics.

Anyway, the next event I'll go to is a Movie Night event at one of the group members homes next month.

I was never a real big Transformers fan when I was growing up. I watched it occasionally but not a lot. But I was intrigued by the possibility of a movie. So I went to see it today. I have to say that I liked it a lot. It's a typical summertime, dumb fun movie. But the key word is dumb fun. It tells the story well and was action packed and a bit silly but just plain fun. But then again, I'm easy to please...
